The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) is one of Minnesota’s premier art museums. The museum hosts around one hundred thousand objects, with collections spanning five thousand years of history and an array of world cultures. Admission to the museum’s permanent collection is always free charge. The MIA has seven curatorial areas: Photographs; Prints and Drawings; Textiles; Design, Decorative Arts, Craft, and Sculpture; Asian Art; Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; and Architecture, Paintings and Modern Sculpture.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts first opened its doors in 1915 in a building designed by the preeminent New York architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White. It was founded by twenty-five Minnesotans who comprised the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts, a group dedicated to increasing the presence of the arts in their community since 1883.
When the museum first opened its permanent collection consisted of eight hundred works of art. Over the course of the last century it has grown to around one hundred thousand objects.
The MIA is located one mile south of downtown at the intersection of 3rd avenue South and East 24th street. The museum is closed every Monday as well as on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and July 4th. The MIA has audio tours featuring information about hundreds of pieces throughout the collection available for four dollars.
