The Como Park Zoo and Marjorie McNeely Conservatory are located in Como Park. The zoo, conservatory and park are property of the city of St. Paul. The park was founded in 1913. There is no admission charged for entry. Como Park houses not just the zoo and the conservatory, but also an amusement park, carousel, lake, picnic shelters, golf course, mini golf course, baseball diamonds, and a pool.
The Como Park Zoo is open, free or charge, everyday of the year and houses a wide variety of animals. Current residents include:
Grant's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, West African Crowned Crane, Black-Footed Penguin, California Sea Lion, Harbor Seal, Lunda Puffin, Mudpuppy, Polar Bear, Tufted Puffin, Caribbean Flamingo, Chilean Flamingo, Galapagos Tortoise, Mallard, Red-breasted Goose, Ruddy Duck, Shelducks , Swan Goose, White-faced Whistling Duck, White-winged Wood Duck, Cougar, Lion, Siberian (Amur) Tiger, Snow Leopard, Bison, Dall Sheep, Demoiselle Crane, Ostrich, Western Tufted Deer, Yellow Billed Stork, Blue-eyed Black Lemur, Debrazza's Monkey, Emperor Tamarin, Geoffrey Tamarin, Hoffmann’s Two-toed Sloth, Orangutan, Spider Monkey, Western Lowland Gorilla, White-faced Saki Monkey, California Sea Lion, Harbor Seal, Arrau River Turtle, Bay-Headed Tanager, Black Pacu, Blue Dacnis or Turquoise Honeycreeper, Emerald Tree Boa, Golden-Headed Manakin, Green Anaconda, Leafcutter Ant, Matamata, Paradise Tanager, Peacock Bass, Red-capped Cardinal, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Red-tail Catfish, Rufous-Crowned Tanager or Burnished-Buff Tanager, Saffron Finch, Silver-Beaked Tanager, Stingray , Sun Bittern, Swallow Tanager, Turquoise Tanager, Violaceous Euphonia, Yellow-Rumped Cacique, Yellow-Spotted Amazon River Turtle, and Gray Wolf.
The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory is open, free of charge, everyday of the year, and is a charming place to spend an afternoon.
The conservatory houses:
Bonsai Garden: The conservatory houses the largest collection of bonsai in the upper Midwest.
Enchanted Garden: The Enchanted Garden is a butterfly garden, full of beautiful flowers, trees, and shrubs that attract and nurture butterflies.
Fern Room: over 100 species of ferns and fern allies present
Japanese garden: The Japanese Garden was designed by famous Japanese landscape designer, Masami Matsuda. The garden represents the long friendship between St. Paul and her sister city, Nagasaki, Japan. The Japanese Garden is open May 1 through September 30.
Orchid house: Many varieties of delicate and exotic orchids can be viewed in the Orchid House.
Palm Dome: Palms fill a 64 foot tall glass dome. Over 150 tropical palms and cycad species fill the dome. Some of the palms are over a century old. A variety of orchids are also displayed in the palm dome.
Sunken Garden: The Sunken Garden displays numerous species of bright and beautiful flowers surrounded by elegant fountains and calming waters.
Tropical Encounters: Immerse yourself Central and South American rainforests in the new Tropical Encounters exhibit. Here you will see, smell, and hear the rainforests plants and animals. There are rainforest trees and plants, as well as, fresh water stingrays, giant river turtles, frogs, toads, fish, free-roaming birds, an anaconda, and, if you keep your eyes on the treeline --- even a sloth.
North Garden: The North Garden contains numerous species including: fig, pomegranate, papaya, mahogany, and chocolate.
