Maps of Norway makes music the way your nana makes cookies. No recipe needed; a dash of that, a smidge of this, and pinch of the other – and bam! – you’ve got some damn good cookies (or in this case a damn good album). Maps of Norway’s base-heavy, danceable style of rock, plays on the borders of genera. They combine many different influences (from Joy Division, to the Buzzcocks, to David Bowie) into a sound truly their own.

Maps of Norway houses some of the best music talents in the Twin Cities. Matt Helgesen’s bass skills are the stuff of legends. He consistently lays down original and truly danceable bass lines. Eric Hanson’s guitar work is lively and precise. It ties the sound together into a cohesive whole and serves as the backbone for the entire concept. Jeff Ball’s drumming is punchy, upbeat, and perfectly complimentary to Helgesen’s bass. Rebecca Leigh’s singing is unconventional and is both riveting and seductive.

Maps of Norway’s full length album, Sister Station, was released in the summer of 2006. They play plenty of shows in the Twin Cities, and their live act is definitely worth catching, so be sure to check them out at one of their upcomings!
