End details for Guthrie Theater - Twin Cities

The Guthrie Theater is truly on of the marvels of the Twin Cities, and is an absolute must for any visit to Minneapolis. The Guthrie was founded in 1963 by Sir Tyrone Guthrie. The first play and last play to run at the old Guthrie building was Hamlet.

The new building, located on the banks of the Mississippi River was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. Since its construction the new Guthrie building has won numerous architectural awards, including Architect’s Magazine’s Best of 2006.The new home of the Guthrie Theater is absolutely stunning and innovative both inside and out.

The Guthrie houses three stages. The much beloved Wurtele Thrust Stage was brought over from the old Guthrie building. This stage has seating on three sides of the stage, allowing the audience to surround all stage action. The stage is also designed to be able to change for each production, to perfectly match the needs of each individual performance. The McGuire Proscenium Stage is a more classic ‘picture frame’ stage, where the entire audience views the play from straight on. The Dowling Studio is of the ‘black box’ stage variety. With a lack of architectural detail and color, the sole focus is on the performance. This freedom of expression allows innovative artists and plays to really shine and grow.

There are also many opportunities to get involved in the action at the Guthrie. The Guthrie offers both classes and camps throughout the year. There are classes available for a wide-range of individuals: kids, teens, adults, business professionals, and artists. Some of the current class offerings at the Guthrie are: Feet of Daring: Intro to Tap; Acting for Fun: Intro to Acting; Sing Your Heart Out: Intro to Singing; Intro to Waltz; Great Taste: Wine 101; Duke it Out: Intro to Stage Combat; Go With It: Intro to Improv; Broadway Moves: Intro to Musical Theater Dance; Play, Write: Intro to Playwriting; Tune in: Reliving Radio Theater; among many, many others.

Visitors to the Guthrie can also get involved by attending pre- and post-play discussions with the actors, artists, and staff; look inside workshops; and conversation series. You can also attend on of the Guthrie’s building tours. The tours are offered every Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The tours are guided and last 45 minutes and allow you to view and learn about normally inaccessible parts of the theater.
