Barley John’s brews up some of the best beer in the state (many would say THE best) and serves amazing made-from scratch food. Located in New Brighton, just two miles northwest of Roseville, this is a can’t-be-missed Minnesota brew pub. Barley John’s also offers growlers to take home with you, but make sure to enjoy a beer (or two) inside as well, so you can sample some of their delicious foods as well. The pub offers a cozy, welcoming atmosphere and also offers a great outdoor dining area, complete with lit fires in the evening and hops growing all about. Be sure to try the out The Dark Knight and the Stockyard IPA. Also highly recommended: Habenero Hummus with Pita Bread and Pizza Laura! Barley John’s offers nightly food and drink specials, as well as many enjoyable events, including an annual hop-picking party and an amazing New Year’s Eve Dinner!
From Barley John’s:
Seasonal Beer on tap:
Belgian Dubbel (6.8%abv)
Rich garnet color with aromas of dried cherry and fig. Slight malt sweetness with a smooth dry finish - this Belgian style Dubbel is made prominent by the yeast strain and accentuated by a touch of biscuit malt and special B. Pin point carbonation lifts the aromatics out of the beer and leaves a silky "Belgian lace" head.
Triple Oat Coffee Stout (6%abv)
We teamed up with local Roastmaster Chris from Dunn Bros. (Roseville) to bring a coffee twist to our Triple Oat Stout. Freshly roasted and ground for a brief steeping in our beer. Aroma from the glass resembles a freshly brewed cup of coffee and the flavor supports the aroma. Oats and roast malts provide the complex stout background that intermingle smoothly with the coffee.
Dark Knight (Vintage 2006) (13.5%abv)
The Dark Knight is a bourbon barrel aged double fermented porter. In this case we brew our standard Old 8 Porter and then feed it more sugar to boost the alcohol content. Once the fermentation is complete the Dark Knight to-be is transferred to Bourbon barrels where it ages from 4-8 months, in this case 7 months. We used barrels from the Rip Van Winkle Distillery which housed their premium bourbon - Pappy Van Winkle - for 20 years. This is a very smooth and mellow bourbon which marries nicely with the dark and complex tones of the double fermented porter. We serve this one in a 5.5oz bourbon glass and it is designed to be a slow and enjoyable brew-apertif. Heavy bourbon nose that fades upon sipping, then the chocolate and malt notes from the porter dominate the middle and a slightly tannic/dry finish to complete the taste.
Rosie's Old Ale (14%abv)
Winterfest 2007 Winner! While she came in with a lower alcohol percentage than the last incarnation, we still gave her the royal treatment and aged her an extra year in Bourbon Barrels - a fermenting time of 8 months and a total aging time of 2 years. Served in a 6oz Bourbon glass, this beer pushes the envelope of "beer" and harkens more towards a fine Sherry or Port - and is served as such. Intense vinous aromatics with a lusciously sweet background, brilliant clarity and that familiar warming tone from the elevated abv%. Rosie's is truly a beer to experience.
Permanent Fixtures:
Little Barley Bitter
Initial rich maltiness with a soft transition into a light caramel flavor and a smooth hop bitterness at the finish.
3.5 percent alcohol
Stockyard IPA {India Pale Ale)
Full bodied with a trainload of hops ~ Northern Brewer, East Kent Goldings, and the rest are a secret. Long hoppy finish, balanced beautifully by malt flavor.
6.8 percent alcohol
Wild Brunette {Wild Rice Brown Ale}
A twist on a classic style. Minnesota wild rice gives this ale a Belgium earthiness with explosive notes of vanilla and almond plus much, much more.
7.5 percent alcohol
Old Eight Porter
Old school porter. Dark, rich chocolate and coffee notes with huge malt characteristics. This is a meal in itself!
8 percent alcohol

Great place in New Brighton. Wonderful food made with fresh, organic ingredients and a beer menu that should be explored in earnest. Awesome patio area during summer months. Always busy, so I recommend going early to get a seat!
